The FIBA Women Basketball World Cup 2018 Host is confirmed to be Spain as announced by the FIBA. The only competition Spain faced to host the tournament was Turkey but a vote between the FIBA’s central board on the hosting of the tournament decided Spain as the host in 18-5 vote result.
A look at the FIBA Women Basketball World Cup history shows that the first ever tournament was held in Chile in 1953. In 1967, the tournament received a consistent cycle of 4 years after which the new edition of the tournament would be hosted. The tournament involves 16 teams which take part in a group and knockout type format to determine the winner.
The US Women’s basketball team is the defending champion for the tournament having won the last championship comprehensively over Spain. Also, the US Women’s team is the most successful team with 9 tournament wins out of 17 with the Soviet Union having won 6 editions.
Although the FIBA Women Basketball World Cup schedule is not yet officially revealed to the world, it is widely speculated that the tournament will take place between September – October 2018 across 2-3 different venues in Spain. The 15 qualified teams from across the world will take part in the Tournament along with Spain. The United States is the favourite to win the tournament three times a row in Spain in 2018.
